Steven Gerrard can boost the Rangers youth ranks, says coach Brian Gilmour

BRIAN GILMOUR hopes the appointment of Steven Gerrard as Rangers boss will help the Auchenhowie Academy go from strength to strength in the coming years.

The Liverpool legend will begin work at Ibrox next month as he takes his first steps into management alongside Gary McAllister.

Gerrard has left his position as Reds’ Under-18s boss to make the move to Glasgow and has agreed a four-year deal with the Light Blues.

He will be given funds to bolster his Gers ranks in the transfer market this summer ahead of a shot at the Europa League and crack at the Premiership.

But Under-17s coach Gilmour is determined to push the next generation of Ibrox stars up through the youth ranks and into Gerrard’s thinking.

He told SportTimes: “I think it is adding to where we are and where we are moving to as a club.

“It is great to have a man of Steven Gerrard’s experience and knowledge coming to Rangers and hopefully he can direct us from first team level.
