Aston Villa missed out on their three main targets to replace Steve Bruce because of their plans for John Terry.
Dean Smith was confirmed in the role on Wednesday night. But Rui Faria, Thierry Henry and Paulo Fonseca all rejected the chance to take over beforehand with Villa understood to be grooming Terry for the role in the future.
As such the club were keen for the former England captain and Chelsea legend to be involved regardless of the identity of Bruce’s successor.
Terry remains hugely popular at Villa Park – inside and outside the dressing room – after playing a key role in the Midlands club’s surge to the Play-Off Final before being beaten by Fulham .
