Pablo Zabaleta has revealed that West Ham need to improve their consistency and mental toughness ahead of the London derby against Tottenham Hotspur after the international break.
Much was expected by the Hammers faithful after adding nine additions in the summer transfer window – however the east London side suffered a dismal start to the season – losing their opening four Premier League encounters.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side went through a mini-renaissance as they enjoyed huge morale boosting victories against Everton and Manchester United and drew with Chelsea but were brought back down to earth with a 1-0 loss against Brighton & Hove Albion.
His side were guilty of some lax defending in the first-half which allowed Glenn Murray to claim the game’s only goal.
Argentina right-back Zabaleta was one of his team’s best players in a better second half performance, however, he was disappointed to leave the Amex Stadium empty handed and highlighted what his team must do in order to improve.
“In the first half we gave the ball away often and cheaply,” he explained. “This is the Premier League and you can’t make those mistakes – we conceded the goal and then you always need to react.
