Dean Smith’s Aston Villa career got off to a perfect start thanks to a 1-0 win over Swansea at a sold-out Villa Park.
Due to the international break, Smith has only had a couple of training sessions with the whole squad, but the difference in style of play was there for all to see. In this first game under Smith, Villa probably had more chances to score than they did in their last three under Steve Bruce.
Villa started positively and they were rewarded for their positive attitude in the 8th minute when Abraham rose above the Swansea defenders to head home Elmohamady’s beautiful cross.
With Steve Bruce in charge, Villa would have tried to defend their early lead, but things are different now and Villa went looking for a second instead.
They should have got that second and then a third and even maybe a fourth, but some good keeping and some profligate finishing, ensured it was a nervous final 15 minutes or so for the home fans.
Respect was paid to former Villa chairman Sir Doug Ellis before kick-off and the players gave him a performance and result that would have made him smile.
