Stoke City

“There isn't just one person or one incident that explains Stoke City's probable relegation. But if there is one moment that sticks out for me and really sticks in my craw, then it was that penalty miss against Brighton in the dying seconds of a 2-2 draw in February. Not the miss itself, costly though it was, but what happened a few seconds before. I didn't believe what I was being told on the car radio at the time, but when I saw it for myself the incident was even worse than the report suggested. Watching Jese kick up such a fuss because he [...]

West Ham are reportedly keen to sign Stoke City duo Jack Butland and Joe Allen, according to The Daily Mail, as cited by Sky Sports. Stoke are currently fighting to stay in England's top division, and are five points adrift of safety. With only three games remaining for The Potters, they look like likely candidates to face the drop. If Stoke do fail to climb out of the bottom three, they could struggle to keep hold of some of their players, with Allen and Butland both likely to be in demand. The Hammers have seemingly already anticipated this situation, and are [...]

Jack Butland's ability to deal with crosses has been questioned for the second time in a week after Stoke City conceded goals in crucial games. The Potters have been pegged back in both of their last two Premier League matches, at West Ham last Monday and then against Burnley at the bet365 Stadium yesterday. Stoke were leading the Clarets 1-0 and on course for a precious three points until Ashley Barnes bundled home Burnley's equaliser midway through the second half. Six days before, Andy Carroll had vollied home an injury-time equaliser to deny Stoke victory at the London Stadium. Read More On that [...]

Stoke City centre-back Ryan Shawcross has said that the club have been ‘sleeping walking towards relegation' after another frustrating result in the Premier League over the weekend. The Potters took the lead against Burnley at the bet365 Stadium, only to end up drawing 1-1 with Sean Dyche‘s men as the hosts passed up a number of crucial chances during the contest. The draw leaves Stoke sitting in 19th place in the standings and four points adrift of 17th-placed Swansea City, who also have a game in hand over the Potters. “You can't nail our bad season to one chance,” Shawcross told Sky Sports [...]

BURNLEY took confidence from Mame Biram Diouf's glaring miss for Stoke on Sunday, according to Match of the Day pundit Kevin Kilbane. The Potters already led against the Clarets when Diouf failed to convert when unmarked 10 yards from goal just before half-time. That goal gave Sean Dyche's side a lifeline and they took it in the second half with a much improved showing, with Ashley Barnes eventually netting the equaliser. “This is the turning point in the game I feel, if this goes in from Diouf it's a totally different second half,” Kilbane said on Match of the Day 2. “Paul Lambert recognises [...]

The fine form of Badou Ndiaye and Moritz Bauer since their January arrivals could be a doubled-edged sword for those wanting to see radical changes to Stoke City's recruitment process. Their success could be merely the death throes of the current process, or a timely reminder that it does get some things right and offer it an 11th-hour stay of execution. The entire process is surely up for discussion at the end of the season and those wanting change will point to the previous four or five windows when Stoke's signings have, not withstanding success stories like Joe Allen, ranged from the average [...]

And so our Premier League status slips inexorably away. A flurry of more intense and acceptable performances cannot redeem a season's worth of dross, or the welter of late points dropped. Yesterday was a microcosm of our season: A great first half display, frustrating Burnley and scoring a really good goal. But then, late in the half, came the moment that cost Stoke City the game. Moritz Bauer's beautiful, arcing cross found Mame Diouf at the far post perfectly, but the Senegalese's touch deserted him with the goal gaping and the chance to take a two-goal lead was lost. Late on, history repeated [...]
