Leeds United will entertain Brentford in the Skybet Championship this Saturday looking to earn their first win under new manager Paul Heckingbottom. The Peacocks secured a high scoring 2-2 draw versus Championship high-flyers Derby County in their last league outing and will come into this clash full of confidence. Anything other than a victory could end their hopes of a late push for a playoff spot this season. Meanwhile, the visitors are also in a rich vein of form after earning a 5-0 victory over Birmingham City in midweek and are currently sitting just four points and one place above the Peacocks. The recent history of the fixture makes a grim reading for Leeds fans as their side have lost their last two meetings with the Bees which includes Brentford's 3-1 triumph over the Peacocks earlier in this campaign. Paul Heckingbottom is expected to opt for a 4-2-3-1 formation and could hand Samuel Saiz his first start after his return from a six-game suspension. 4-2-3-1 Leeds United Predicted Lineup To Face Brentford Defence Felix Wiedwald will once again start in goal for the Peacocks and is expected to be shielded by a back four of Liam Cooper and Pontus Jansson in central defence [...]

Earlier today Leeds United's U23 side took on their Sheffield Wednesday at Thorp Arch, with the Whites hoping to maintain their recent good home form over the visiting Owls. The well-performing U23s were bolstered with the likes of former Juventus midfielder Ouasim Buoy, young Dutch striker Jay-Roy Grot getting a run out alongside Swedish forward Pawel Cibicki. It was the latter that lit up the opening exchanges of the game. It wasn't a case of a ‘blazing' opening, it was more an inferno as Cibicki put the young Whites 2-0 up inside two minutes. His first was a blast from the edge of the area that beat Wednesday keeper Dan Wallis all ends up. Moments later it was a brace for the Swede, Cibicki drilling the ball through the legs of a young Owl's defender and into the goal. Wednesday pulled one back from the spot after just six minutes, Almen Abdi firing beyond the despairing dive of Bailey Peacock-Farrell in the Leeds United goal. It was definitely a banger of a start from both sides, sides looking to play an open and flowing game of football. Leeds, in particular, were passing the ball around well and showing good movement off the ball [...]

Leeds United target Josh Brownhill might not be on his way to Elland Road after all. The talented Bristol City midfielder has played an extremely impressive season and has attracted interest several clubs including Bristol City. It is now being claimed that Bristol City who signed the player to a new contract are not looking to sell him to Leeds United. With their hopes of getting Brownhill going down, here are three replacement they can look at for next season. Marko Grujic Dubbed as the “new Nemanja Matic” for his tall, commanding figure and his quiet yet effective presence on the pitch, Grujic is one player who is still waiting to kick off his career at Liverpool. He was convinced personally by Klopp's call to snub other clubs in favour of Liverpool. The 21-year joined Liverpool during the 2015-16 season and the box to box midfielder was sent back on loan for the rest of the season and had to wait till the next season to make his Liverpool. Since then, he has only played 12 games for the club. Sitting on the bench week in week out has hampered his progress and is perhaps deserving of more game time, given the fact that [...]

Former Leeds United midfielder Andy Couzens has told FLW that he believes the Whites need to look to bolster their defensive options during the summer transfer window. Speaking to FLW at length this week, Couzens has discussed an array of topics surrounding Leeds, including the club's current squad. There has been plenty of debate about Leeds' current defensive options, after two poor goals were given away in Wednesday night's 2-2 draw against Derby County in the Sky Bet Championship. Couzens has given his verdict on the options available to Paul Heckingbottom, with the 42-year-old admitting he doesn't believe they are as strong as the group Garry Monk had available to him last term. The likes of Kyle Bartley, Rob Green and Charlie Taylor helped to guide Leeds to a seventh placed finish last season, but the trio departed in the summer, leaving just Pontus Jansson, Luke Ayling, Liam Cooper and Gaetano Berardi. Discussing Leeds' defensive frailties, Couzens said: “I think the back five need to be looked at. “You look at the back five from last year that had Bartley in there, Green in there, Ayling, we had Berardi in there, we had Taylor in there. “I think we need to be a bit more [...]

Brentford are one of the in-form sides in the division and are coming of the back of thumping Birmingham City 5-0 during the week. Dean Smith sets his side out to play only one way and they come packed with underrated players and over achievers in their squad. We will have to be on it from the start tomorrow because Brentford will know if they play their game and play well they will get goals, can we cope with them? MY XI (4-4-1-1) GK – Andy Lonergan – I think Wiedwald has lost his defence, I think he's a better all-round keeper compared to Lonergan but we need someone talking. Ironic it would be the reverse fixture of Lonergan's nightmare game this season if he did start. New keeper required in summer. RB – Vurnon Anita – Should never have been dropped during the week for me but the disaster had by Laurens De Bock has to be in the mind of Paul Heckingbottom and maybe shifting Berardi or Anita there is the short-term answer. CB – Pontus Jansson – The same required from Jansson who is becoming increasingly frustrated that his fellow defenders are simply not up to scratch. CB – Liam Cooper [...]

Paul Heckingbottom is still looking for his first win as Leeds United boss, with the Yorkshire side set to welcome play-off chasing Brentford to Elland Road tomorrow. The Whites have had a frustrating three games under the former Barnsley manager, drawing two and losing one. However, there have been positive signs in the last week, with Leeds earning a point from 2-0 at home to Bristol City before leading high-flying Derby until stoppage time on Wednesday. And, that positivity in the camp was demonstrated by keeper Andy Lonergan who delivered a passionate tweet ahead of tomorrow's game. Given the form of current number one Felix Wiedwald, it wouldn't be a big surprise to see the experienced stopper return to the side. The German made a huge error against the Robins on Sunday as he failed to deal with a routine long throw, whilst a misunderstanding with Liam Cooper led to Derby's late equaliser in the week. So, whether Lonergan's tweet is because he knows he is playing or just a general message of support remains to be seen but Heckingbottom must be considering a change. The Verdict Leeds fans will be glad to see their player sending positive messages out on twitter ahead of what is a big [...]

Leeds United are still yet to win under Paul Heckingbottom having conceded a stoppage-time equaliser to Derby County on Wednesday night. That match finished 2-2 and Leeds' last two matches have finished in that scoreline after the Whites came from 2-0 down at half time last Sunday to take a point from their home match with Bristol City. FLW asked Sam Saunders, pundit for EFL Matters on Sky Sports for his thoughts on how Heckingbottom has settled in at Elland Road. He said: “They came back against Bristol City when a couple of weeks ago they might have downed tools. “To go to Derby and being minutes away from getting a win shows improvement. Every time a new manager comes in, you see that spike in performance – it's just getting it for seven or eight games. “They've got a strong squad there. Adam Forshaw is playing week in, week out there. He's a good player, he was singled out for individual praise last season in the Premier League and people were raving about him at Middlesbrough. “I think Leeds have got a snip there in the current market. Saiz coming back from suspension, he's one of their standout performers this year, without a [...]

Leeds United are set to welcome back their Spanish midfielder Samuel Saiz after he served a six-match ban for spitting at an opponent during their disappointing FA Cup defeat at Newport County in January. The Peacocks were handed a big boost ahead of their trip to Derby County on Wednesday night with Saiz back in their match-day squad. He started the match on the bench and came on after 55 minutes to help his side retake the lead through Ergjan Alioski's goal only to see the Rams equalise in injury time courtesy of a Kasey Palmer strike. The contest ended with both teams sharing the spoils in a highly entertaining 2-2 draw at Pride Park. Heckingbottom is still searching for his first victory as a Leeds United manager since replacing their former boss Thomas Christiansen at the helm. He has suffered a defeat at Sheffield United before securing two 2-2 draws versus Bristol City and Derby County respectively in his first three matches in charge at Elland Road. In a pre-match interview ahead of their clash with Derby County at Pride Park, the Leeds United boss shed some light on Saiz's situation at the club and was quoted to have said, “He [...]

During his six-game ban for spitting in Leeds United's FA Cup defeat to Newport County, Whites fans have been ticking off the game to Samu Saiz's return like eager schoolchildren awaiting Christmas. Saiz's impact at Leeds United has been nothing short of spectacular, the diminutive Spaniard becoming that mercurial talent that the Whites had been longing for to fill that advanced role behind the striker/s employed up top by a succession of managers/head coaches at Elland Road. In that coveted #10 role have been a number of players, but players who didn't really fit. In a way, they were biding time for the right peg to fill the right hole and that peg has arrived in Samu Saiz. Players such as Adryan, Alex Mowatt and, indeed, even current assist leader Pablo Hernandez were only keeping the chair warm for the mercurial talent that Saiz is. As Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Phil Hay pointed out on Twitter last night, it was a welcome return for the Spaniard who signed on at Elland Road after a 12 goal/eight assist season last time out with Huesca in La Liga 2. Absolutely glaring to see how much Leeds have missed Saiz. Driving them forward every time he gets [...]

An injury to Pablo Hernandez last night could prove costly for the side as his form has been slowly increasing in worth as the season has gone on. The Spanish playmaker has recently expressed his want for a new contract at the club but hobbled from the Pride Park pitch last night. Hernandez was asked in the pre-match presser if he wanted to stay at Leeds for another year and he was very clear in saying that was exactly what he wanted. He also made it very clear that the club haven't even mentioned a new deal yet and that is concerning given how important he has become in recent weeks. The return of Samu Saiz will take the pressure of Hernandez but in fairness the stand-in skipper has arguably flourished with the armband and added pressure. The fact a new deal isn't on the cards as of yet shouldn't be a surprise as he probably falls outside of the wage bracket set by the club, will a new deal come? Who knows, everyone else had their new deals early on in the season, Hernandez probably thinks this could be his last season at the football club. Hernandez was subbed off for [...]

Thomas Christiansen has had his say on the Leeds United exit just a few weeks ago and he has some clear views on why his spell came to an abrupt end. Samu Saiz, early season form and injuries are what he believes cost him his job, although some will tell you these didn't help, tactics, man management and awful decisions didn't help him either. Thomas Christiansen was sacked at the start of February and replaced with highly rated Paul Heckingbottom just two days later as Andrea Radrizzani cut ties with a man he said was a “mistake”. He was out of his depth and Radrizzani told fans he was sorry, and the “job was to big for Christiansen”. He went on to say that a lack of squad management and general leadership was severely lacking at the game at Newport, dubbed the shame game by the owner was just about the final straw. After no wins in 2018 and some horrible form he was sacked less than 9 months into the role. “Our best player, Spaniard Samu Saiz, got a red card for spitting in the face of an opponent as we went out of the FA Cup against Newport” “Saiz was our [...]

Reported Leeds United and Leicester City target George Hirst will feature for current club Sheffield Wednesday for the first time this season on Friday according to the Sheffield Star. The 19-year-old Sheffield born hotshot was a Toulon Tournament winner with England Under-20s last summer but a contractual dispute with his club has seen the player fail to make a single appearance at any level for Sheffield Wednesday this term. Hirst is out of contract at Hillsborough at the end of the current campaign and it has previously been reported that both Leeds United and Leicester City are weighing up moves for the talented youngster. It has now been revealed that Hirst has resumed training with Wednesday and the player could make his long-awaited comeback for The Owls when their Under-23 side take on one of the striker's admirers in the form of Leeds United on Friday. The Leeds United coaching staff are undoubtedly set to run the rule over Hirst during the match, however, his return to action may indicate that the youngster's career with Sheffield Wednesday is not certain to end just yet. Hirst has scored goals freely for The Owls at various youth levels and the player made his senior debut for [...]
