Brendan Rodgers will look for his side to bounce back from a disappointing defeat in Russia when they travel to face Aberdeen on Sunday. Celtic exited from the Europa League after they fell to a heavy 3-0 defeat, but a win will open up a 12-point lead over their closest rivals. Derek McInnes' side are nine points adrift in second place, and have won five of their last seven games ahead of the top of the table meeting. The Hoops have won the last nine meetings, scoring six without reply in the last two games, and will look to continue that run in the 1:30pm kick-off at Pittodrie. Celtic Patrick Roberts played for the development squad on Friday night against Partick Thistle and is expected to return to first-team action next week. Stuart Armstrong is still out of action after undergoing a hernia operation along with Dedryck Boyata, who is out of action until March with a groin injury. Leigh Griffiths and Marvin Compper are both out with calf injuries and have no known return date. Nir Bitton, Craig Gordon and Michael Johnston will likely be out of action for the remainder of the season through injury. Long-term absentee Jonny Hayes is out with a broken leg. Aberdeen Stevie May [...]

After three months on the sidelines, Patrick Roberts is finally returning to full fitness and was given an hour of playing time with Celtic's development squad on Friday. As reported by The Daily Record, Roberts appeared alongside Tommy McIntyre's young hoops as they defeated Patrick Thistle 1-0 in the development league. The English winger last appeared for Celtic in the draw at Fir Park way back in November but has now recovered from a hamstring problem that has plagued him since his return to Glasgow in the summer. After a very successful initial 18-month loan spell, injuries have prevented Roberts finding his best form and limited him to just 12 appearances this campaign. I finished [the season] quite well last year, so that's the main objective again. I've had a tough season with injuries and it's about getting right and finishing as strongly as I can. Celtic fans will be desperate to see the 21-year-old back in action with his dribbling and creativity that the Scottish Champions have been lacking, with just one goal in the last three games. As Brendan Rodgers looks to secure a second domestic treble, Roberts will have a vital part to play in his quest for more trophies as Celtic prepare [...]

Celtic's recent cycle of European exploits has been underwhelming to say the least. The Hoops either don't get through the qualification period or they exit competitions with a bit of a whimper. After qualifying for the Champions League this year, Celtic won just two of their eight matches in Europe (six in the Champions League, two in the Europa League). Whilst domestic success is fantastic for Celtic, their next step has to be to make a serious mark in Europe as, at the moment, the Hoops are seen by many as a bit an afterthought on the continent. A club the size of Celtic should be competing in Europe, but something, or some things, are holding them back. I've taken a look at four things that Celtic should do if they want to become a side who can compete in European competition every season. The post Four things Celtic must do to ensure they can compete in Europe every year appeared first on Read Celtic. [...]

Celtic have maintained sheer dominance in domestic competitions but are yet to re-establish their long-gone European stature. Brendan Rodgers, the former Liverpool gaffer, has arguably done a splendid job by introducing an exciting style of football with plenty of fresh talents alongside a number of veterans who have adapted well to the Northern Irishman's football philosophy. He, however, is concentrating upon building a youthful squad who will flourish under him and work as a unit to achieve greater glories in the longer run. The Hoops have recently roped in 16-year old goalkeeper Liam Hughes from NIFL Premiership outfit Dungannon Swifts F.C. who is pretty highly rated there and has already made senior appearances for his boyhood side before plying his trade to Scotland. Hughes has also represented Northern Ireland at U-17 levels and shown promises to be one of the greatest of their stars in years to come. Celtic have veteran Craig Gordon as their first-choice custodian who is in his mid-thirties whereas Dorus de Vries, his deputy, is 37-year-old and unlikely to stay beyond this summer. Scotsman Scott Bain has been loaned in from Dundee FC for the remainder of the campaign but is quite unlikely to be handed a permanent [...]

Celtic FC have been sheer dominant in domestic competitions since ex-Liverpool gaffer Brendan Rodgers' appointment as the Hoops boss earlier last season and were dreaming of a run in Europe as well following the slender 1-0 first leg win over Zenit St Petersburg at Celtic Park in the Europa League Final Stage encounter. They, however, had a tremendously difficult contest against the Russian heavyweights at Krestovsky Stadium tonight and failed to make an impact throughout the game. The Scottish champions surrendered miserably and were handed a thumping 3-0 defeat to get knocked out of the competition. Below are the Celtic players rated from their dreadful defeat against FC Zenit St Petersburg. Dorus De Vries: 4.5 De Vries is having a run of games in absence of injured Craig Gordon. Could have done little to stop Branislav Ivanovic's early header but was at fault as he failed to deal with Daler Kuzyayev's long-range strike. Mikael Lustig: 5.5 Played plenty of passes at the back to hold possession but offered little going forward and lacked enough defensive composure too. Kristoffer Ajer: 5.5 The teenager has high potential to be a top-notch centre-back and dominated aerially along with good sense of passing. However, he should have done a lot [...]
